Solar Reflective Paint

Solar Reflective Paint

Choose from a range of Solar Reflective Roof Coatings

Promain supply a quality range of solar reflective paints for tiles and flat roofs, available in white, aluminium and silver finishes. The coatings themselves are designed to reflect sunlight from flat roofs, protecting the surface from becoming damaged by heat or UV light. Once dry, the solar reflective paint will reduce heat build-up in the rooms and areas below, protecting against high temperatures in areas exposed to lots of sunlight.

Solar reflective roof paint can also help to prolong the life expectancy of bitumen roof felt by reducing the surface temperature. This means that the asphalt will be less prone to movement, and thus, less likely to become damaged over time. Below, you will find solar reflecting paints and coatings from the likes of Rustoleum (Dac Hydro Alu), Coo-Var (Q253), Centrecoat (Silver Solar Reflecting Paint) and Blackfriar (Solar Reflective Roof Paint).

Choosing the right solar reflective paint for your roof

Solar reflective paint helps cut heat build up on roofs that sit in direct sun. A good coating reflects solar heat away from the surface, which can reduce heat absorption, support thermal efficiency and help protect the roof from UV damage, weathering and early ageing.

For homes, garages, workshops, warehouses and commercial buildings, the right solar reflective roof paint can help make the building more comfortable and add practical protection where roofs face high temperatures.

Where solar reflective paint works best on porous surfaces

Solar reflective paint is often used on flat roofs, felt, asphalt, concrete, masonry, roof tiles and some metal surfaces, subject to the product selected. It is ideal for roofs exposed to the sun for long hours, especially where heat can affect the substrate beneath.

On porous surfaces, such as concrete or weathered felt, preparation is important. Clean away dirt, debris, moss and loose paint before application. Older bituminous roofing systems can also benefit from a solar reflective coat, as it helps slow surface breakdown and gives added protection against rain, UV and general wear.

White, silver and aluminium solar reflective paint options

The right colour depends on the project, surface and the appearance you want. White solar reflective paint is often selected where strong solar reflective performance and lower heat absorption are required. Silver or aluminium solar reflective paint is a common choice for bitumen, felt and commercial roof areas.

For example, Coo-Var W489 White Solar Reflective Paint is available as a white Solar Reflective Paint 5L option. Aluminium and silver finishes may be more suitable for traditional roof refurbishment work, especially on bituminous roofing systems.

Best solar reflective paint for flat roofs and thermal efficiency

The best solar reflective paint depends on the roof surface, exposure level and whether waterproofing is required. Blackfriar Solar Reflective Roof Paint is designed for flat roofs and helps reflect and dissipate heat and sunlight.

For higher performance protection, Mapei Aquaflex Roof HRoffers a white liquid roofing membrane with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance. This can help improve thermal efficiency while adding a clean, finished appearance to the roof.

Roof solar reflective paint for bituminous roofing systems and heat absorption

Roof solar reflective paint is especially useful on asphalt and bitumen based roofs because these surfaces can absorb heat quickly. Over time, high temperatures can cause softening, movement, cracks and stress in the coating or substrate.

Centrecoat Renovation Solar Reflective Paint is designed as an additional waterproof protective layer for ageing bituminous roofing systems. It helps treat weathered bitumen and protects against UV degradation, helping extend roof life in many cases.

Solar reflective paint for polycarbonate roof areas

Solar reflective paint for polycarbonate roof areas should be chosen with care. Not every product is suitable for plastic roof sheets, rooflights or translucent panels. Before you apply any reflective paint, check adhesion, compatibility and whether light transmission needs to remain clear.

Promain Paints’ technical team can recommend a suitable product for your surface, especially where the roof has unusual materials or mixed substrates.

When waterproofing and solar reflective protection matters too

Some roofs need more than heat reduction. If the roof also needs waterproofing, flexibility or crack bridging, an elastomeric coating may be a better option.

Bedec Superflex Elastomeric Coating for Roofs and Walls is a flexible waterproof membrane and is also available in a solar reflective finish. Britannia Durashield is another strong seller for long lasting waterproof roof protection. Always check the product features, coverage rate per litre and whether one coat or two coats are required.

Application tips for long lasting results

For the best result, apply solar reflective paint to a clean, dry and sound surface. Remove dirt, debris, moss, loose coatings and oil before painting. Repair cracks, splits and damaged areas first.

Most products can be applied by brush or roller. Stir the paint well before use, and do not thin unless the manufacturer recommends it. Some coatings may need a first coat followed by a second coat, with drying times often subject to weather, temperature and surface condition. In some cases, a second coat can be ready after two hours, but always read the container label before application.

Check whether tools need cleaning with water or white spirit. Do not apply before rain, onto damp surfaces or in temperatures outside the product guidance.
